Position Title:            Student Photographer

Department:            Recreation and Wellness

Division:                   Student Affairs

Reports To:               Assistant Director, Communications & Outreach

Hours Per Week:    Varies

Starting Wage:         $11.00

Position Description

Student Photographers have the opportunity to capture unique and compelling moments that highlight the impact of Recreation & Wellness programs and services. Through a combination of photography and videography, these staff members are encouraged to use their creative abilities to record and archive the history of the department

Task & Supervision

Student Photographers report directly to the Assistant Director for Competitive Sports however they may receive project requests from various members of the RecWell professional staff. Once give an assignment, these staff members are expected to work independently through project execution and delivery to ensure the requestor’s needs are met. These assignments may require evening and weekend hours.

As a member of the Marketing Team, photographers provide supplemental imagery that support the design work of the department’s graphic designers. Photographers are responsible for all aspects of the digital work flow leveraging their knowledge of current trends and technology to provide high quality results. Following the completion of all assignments, images should be appropriately catalogued for future reference and use.

Student Photographers daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the follow:

 Event/Program Coverage (50%)

  • Capture striking images that highlight the programs and services offered 1, 4
  • Complete assignments in a timely manner 6
  • Review departmental calendar to identify story-capturing opportunities 1

 Digital Workflow Management (35%)

  • Responsible for post-processing and editing of images 4
  • Provide high quality print-ready images for use in printed publications and displays 4
  • Develop web and digital media images for use in departmental marketing channels 4
  • Accurately review and catalogue completed work

Supplemental Photography Requests (15%)

  • Conduct and execute photo shoots including lighting setup and set design 5, 6, 8
  • Assist graphic designers by providing requested photography to supplement project development 3



Required Skills, Experience, and Certifications

  • Comprehensive working knowledge of DSLR Cameras
  • Strong competency with Adobe image editing software (Photoshop, Lightroom and Bridge)
  • Familiarity with macOS operating system and Apple products
  • Ability to work independently with minimal direction
  • Comfort with approaching and interacting with staff, participants and spectators

Preferred Skills, Experience, and Certifications

  • Experience managing and conducting photoshoots
  • Knowledge of proper lighting techniques
  • Video recording and editing experience
  • Previous sports photography experience
