Online Peer Supporter (OPS)

New Student Transitions & First Year Experience (NST&FYE) is committed to providing a comprehensive and collaborative approach to ensure the success and retention of our new students. 

 

NST & FYE offers a range of programs and resources for new students delivered through orientation programs, transition resources, peer support, and student leadership. Drawing from extensive knowledge about the first year experience, NST & FYE educates the campus community about the unique and evolving needs of our new students and their families in order for all of us to provide optimum support inside and outside the classroom. 

 

Supervised by the Assistant Director of New Student Transitions, the Online Peer Supporter (OPS) team is made up of passionate student leaders dedicated to the success and positive transition into UNCG for our online degree-seeking students. This team contributes to the success of our online first year students by supporting them through their Online Student Orientation (ONL100 & ONL101), providing them with peer-to-peer academic and personal guidance, engaging with them to create community, and collecting their feedback on the online first year experience at UNCG. 

 

Job Description: 

Job responsibilities include: 

  • Assist with the seamless orientation and transition of online first year students into UNCG by: 
    • Providing administrative support related to the online first year population; included, but not limited to, email, phone, and texting line support 
    • Assist online first years with the process of enrolling in and completing Online Student Orientation (ONL 100 & ONL 101) 
    • Assist NST & FYE staff with the creation and execution of community engagement events focused on online first year students, such as the YFY Success Series. 
  • Provide peer-to-peer support services aimed at online first years: 
    • Host online drop-in hours where online first years can interact with a peer and have questions or concerns triaged 
    • Assist online first years with finding and utilizing UNCG support services 
    • Evaluate and collect feedback on the online first year experience to better improve services 
  • Provide support for NST & FYE departmental programs and services 
  • Represent and assist the New Student Transitions & First Year Experience office at University and office events, and serve as a positive role model and ambassador for the office at all times 

 

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Ability to work 8-10 hours per week 
  • Flexibility to help with programs beyond typical work hours, as necessary  
  • Demonstrated skills and qualities consistent with job responsibilities 
  • An overall GPA of at least 2.75 and be in good standing with the University, including major department and the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities 

 

 Other Preferred Skills: 

  • Ability to perform administrative tasks including answering phones, making copies, sorting electronic files, tracking inventory, manual labor, etc. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a friendly and personable manner with students, faculty, staff and the general public. 
  • Exceptional customer service skills and attention to detail. 
  • Thorough knowledge and application of computers, including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Qualtrics, Microsoft Teams, social media, Canva, and office equipment. 
  • Be a self-starter, dependable, organized, creative and able to multitask. 
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and manage confidential information appropriately. 
  • Knowledge of the University’s online environment and resources. 
  • Ability to schedule working hours Monday-Friday based on class schedule and needs of online student population. This could include normal business and evening hours.

 

Salary:  

  • $12.00 per hour in the 2024-2025 Academic Year 

 

Dates of employment: 

  • 2024-2025 Academic Year 
  • Hourly pay starting on September 2, 2024 - May 8, 2025 

 

Additional Details: 

  • A one-year commitment is appreciated to make an impact and facilitate position continuity 
  • During the academic year, this position will complete their hours based on class schedule and online student population needs. This might include hosting evening drop-in hours to be available for online first year students. 
  • Preference is given to current online degree-seeking undergraduate students in at least their second semester at UNCG
