The Office of Leadership & Civic Engagement is hiring students to serve as Catalyst Leaders for the 2024-25 academic year starting in August 2024 (this position is a year-long commitment with an opportunity for renewal). Catalyst is a Saturday, day-long, service program in which students gain knowledge of a particular social/environmental issue, participate in hands-on community service projects, and reflect on their experience in order to develop as engaged citizens. On average, there are 5 to 6 Catalyst Days each semester, and each Catalyst has a different theme. More information about the program can be found here.

Catalyst Leaders play a vital role in the Catalyst program. These students will contribute their ideas and efforts, coordinating and implementing this service-oriented program in collaboration with OLCE staff and supervised by an OLCE Graduate Assistant.

Responsibilities:

  • Co-lead a Catalyst day one Saturday per month during the following months: September, October, November, January, February, March, April
  • Facilitate a pre-trip meeting before each Catalyst Day to review itinerary and logistics, and begin to develop relationships among participants
  • Coordinate and implement Catalyst experiences, including maintaining effective communication with community partners and student participants, ordering breakfast and lunch for Catalyst days, facilitating issue education and reflection activities and overall, ensuring a high-quality experience for all participants
  • Attend weekly team meetings to stay up to date on all Catalyst efforts as well as team trainings and retreats
  • Meet with supervisor on a one-on-one basis at least once a semester
  • Assist with program recruitment efforts
  • Research possible social and environmental issues and Community Partners who are focused on those issues
  • Participate as a Site Leader during Spartan Service Day and MLK Day of Service
  • Participate in van training and drive OLCE 15-passenger vehicles during the Catalyst projects
  • Support the Office of Leadership & Civic Engagement in other capacities when needed. This may include tabling, swiping Spartan cards for attendance at programs, etc.

Qualifications:

  • Interest, experience, and/or passion for community service
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to effectively work with a team and lead a group of students
  • Timely, professional, and responsible, as Catalyst leaders act as representatives of UNCG and OLCE while in the community on Catalyst days
  • Availability for one retreat per semester, one Saturday per month, weekly team meetings, and semi-regular check-ins with co-leaders
  • A valid driver's license and a good driving record

Catalyst Leaders will be compensated $10.00/hour and can expect to work 5-10 hours/week, during the academic year.
