Position Title:             Swim Instructor

Department:             Recreation and Wellness

Division:                    Student Affairs

Reports To:               Assistant Director, Aquatics & Risk Management

Hours Per Week:      Varies

Starting Wage:           $15.00/hr.

Position Description

The swim instructor position holds significant importance to the successful operations of the Kaplan Center Natatorium. Swim instructors are tasked with the planning and teaching of lessons, private, semi-private or group, to children and/or adults of all levels and abilities through quality and appropriate instruction.

Task & Supervision

Swim instructors will receive direction supervision and guidance from the Swim Instructor Program Assistant, as well as the Aquatics Assistant Director and Graduate Assistant. It is important swim instructors always represent the Department of Recreation & Wellness in a professional manner, making decisions that are reflective of university, department, and program policies.

Swim instructors are responsible for creating realistic goals and motivating the participants through each lesson. This will require assessing the progress of each participant throughout all sessions. Swim instructors are to communicate regularly to participants and their parents, if applicable, about their lessons and progress made.

In addition to teaching swim lessons, swim instructors are expected to attend all required meetings and trainings as scheduled. It is the responsibility of swim instructors to maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment for participants of all ages. 

Swim Instructor daily responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the follow:

Instructing and Assessing (80%)

  • Provide swimming and water safety instruction to participants of all ages and abilities. (1,2,8)
  • Instruct at the appropriate level and evaluate participants in swim lessons. (1)
  • Adhere to program standards, including safety and cleanliness standards, and ensure consistency with evidence-based practices. (6)
  • Communicate regularly with participants to schedule lessons. (2)
  • Maintain positive relationships with participants and parents of participants if applicable. (2,6)

Staff Training and Development (15%)

  • Attend all required meetings and trainings as scheduled. (3,7)
  • Maintain an appropriate level of fitness to competently perform all job-related tasks. (7)

Marketing & Promotions (5%)

  • Represent the Department of Recreation & Wellness in a professional manner at all times. (2,3)
  • Assist with program marketing. (2)

Required Skills, Experience, and Certifications

  • Current CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid Certifications
  • Must have thorough knowledge of swimming
  • Must be currently enrolled student in good academic standing at UNCG
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with others
  • Willing to work morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours as scheduled

Preferred Skills, Experience, and Certifications

  • Previous swim instructor experience or willingness to obtain American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification

Additional Skills, Experience, and Certifications for a Lifeguard position

  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or willingness to obtain before hired
  • Current Recreation & Wellness Risk Management and Blood Borne Pathogen Training
  • Must be currently enrolled student in good academic standing at UNCG
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with others
  • Willing to work morning, afternoon, evening, and weekend hours as scheduled
  • Must pass a lifeguard test
